About GCPS
The Club has been in existence as the Gold Coast Camera Club for Approximately 55 years (records are a little unclear on when the Club first began). The Club name was changed in 2000 to the Gold Coast Photographic Society.
We average 70 – 90 members with a wide range of ages and backgrounds. The Club generally meets 3 times per month on a Thursday evening. There is usually a field trip each month where members meet up for a range of photography activities.
Most Club nights are held at our Worongary location and provide opportunities for members to participate in club competitions, listen to presenters and speakers on photography related topics and undertake practical activities. Details of this years activities can be found on our Events Page.
However, at times we have an online presence with inter-state and international presenters and these sessions are held via Zoom as our preferred platform.
GCPS has monthly Club Competitions providing members with opportunities to submit images in an open category or in a specified theme or topic area. Images can be in colour or monochrome and there are also opportunities to submit printed images. While competitors in themselves do not define us as photographers, the Club does recognises members work through several annual awards.
We have three grades for competition purposes, A grade, an intermediate AB grade and B (for beginners). New members can submit a small portfolio of images to the Committee to determine their initial grading.
Judges assume A grade members understand the technical aspects of photography, including an understanding of composition, focusing, use of flash, shutter speeds and aperture combinations for a variety of effects.
Our Judges understand that B and AB grade members are developing their knowledge and skills of photography and the Judges comments and feedback often provide constructive guidance on how to improve an image.
GCPS also enters into a number of competitions external to the Club to provide further opportunities for members to develop their photographic skills. Many members also compete in National and International competitions for both Amateur and Professional Photographers.
